Become A Tutor 

Student-Athlete Support Services provides tutoring in nearly every subject area. SASS tutors offer quality academic support by helping student-athletes who are experiencing academic difficulty or need additional support to develop academic skills and course-specific knowledge. Training will be provided to tutors to effectively meet the needs of tutees.

Tutors are expected to:

  • Follow all VCU, NCAA, and conference rules and regulations
  • Be knowledgeable in chosen content areas
  • Be capable of teaching study skills and learning strategies
  • Be able to work with student-athletes from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Have a patient and encouraging attitude

Qualifications

VCU undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students are eligible to apply for tutor positions within the athletic department. Community members who hold a bachelor's degree and have specific expertise are also eligible to apply. To be considered for a position as a subject tutor, all candidates must meet these minimum requirements to be considered:

  • Be available at least 12 hours a week from the first day of classes to the end of final exams
  • 3.2 cumulative GPA or higher
  • Currently be enrolled in at least their second semester at VCU
  • Enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate or 4.5 graduate credits at VCU
  • Commitment to working a full semester
  • Attendance at orientation
  • Available to work a minimum of 10 hours per week
  • Be able to work with student-athletes from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds

Lead tutors

Experienced tutors who have worked for VCU Student-Athlete Support Services for at least two semesters are eligible to apply for promotion to the position of lead tutor. Up to four lead tutors will be selected each year from those who apply. Lead tutors will take on additional responsibilities, including assisting with training, observing tutors and developing resources or workshops for students.

  1. Completion of supplemental questions on application
  2. An unofficial copy of your transcript(s)
  3. A letter or recommendation from one faculty member

Typical hiring date ranges: 

  • Fall semester start: May - August
  • Spring semester start: October - December
