Faculty Resources
The Office of Student-Athlete Support Services encourages faculty members to communicate with Student-Athletes and their Academic Coordinator with any comments and concerns. Below are resources regarding the VCU Faculty Athletics Representative and the VCU Missed Class Policy.
Faculty Athletics Representative
A FAR is a member of the faculty at an NCAA member institution who has been designated by the institution to serve as a liaison between the institution and the athletics department, and also as a representative of the institution in conference and NCAA affairs. The role of the FAR is to ensure that the academic institution establishes and maintains the appropriate balance between academics and intercollegiate athletics.
Missed Class Policy
Students representing the university – excused absences. Students who represent the university (athletes and others) do not choose their schedules. All student athletes should provide their schedules to their instructors at the beginning of the semester. The Intercollegiate Athletic Council strongly encourages faculty to treat missed classes or exams (because of a scheduling conflict) as excused absences and urges faculty to work with the students to make up the work or exam.
All student-athletes will provide their professors with a travel itinerary for the semester for any away travel and home competition conflicts. Any concerns regarding student-athlete attendance should be directed to the Academic Coordinator who advises that sport.
